WNBA DFS Strategy (Cash + Small-Field GPP)

WNBA DFS is one of the softest edges in daily fantasy.

Smaller player pools. Less competition.
And in theory this feels exciting, but only larger prize pools could boost interest in WNBA DFS slates anytime soon.

I say this as an unfortunate fact that is changing with time. You’re here….I’m here. So, I guess that says quite a bit.

Why WNBA DFS Is Viable

Three structural advantages:

  • Tight rotations. Less randomness than the NBA and considering that rotations can be pretty predictable it says alot. Translation, less wrong choices.
  • Condensed usage rates. Fewer players seeing most of the time on the floor creates steep drop offs in usage behind the top 1-3 options on any given team.
  • Smaller slates. With fewer games each night, typically 2-5 , you can dive deeper into understanding contrarian picks and all the factors impacting game environment. But also, less wrong choices.

Cash Game Strategy WNBA DFS

Cash is about stability, not creativity. If I’m choosing to hand-build my lineups with limited bankroll; there is no option outside of cash game contest. Maybe a nice, single entry small GPP from time to time.

  • MPG (Minutes Per Game) – look to players that are playign upwards of thirty minutes. Opportunity over talent and efficiency.
  • Eat the Chalk. Again, less options mean fewer wrong choices. Don’t test hunches or get too out of the box. Eat the chalk and look to pivot in one , maybe two spaces elsewhere in your roster.
  • Stars and value plays. Salary restirctions limit how many top players you can fit into one lineup, the skill of DFS lies in being able to decipher where plays could be over or under priced.
  • Peripheral Stats are good. Players involved in all aspects of the game are great to target and defensive matchups are easier to exploit with a look into a teams complete statistical picture.
  • Quick reactions and late swap. Be prepared to pivot your lineups based on named starters and injuries. Swapping players before and after a slate locks is an added advantage to hand-building lineups in real time.

At this point, detailed sports data and daily fantasy projections are most useful. When you know what you are looking for then at least you have a methodology to grow and adjust with time.

Build Around Game Environments

On small slates, context matters more than projections.

Target:

  • competitive games
  • higher pace
  • condensed rotations

Player Pricing

A rule of thumb. You want WNBA players to get you five times their cost in fantasy points for FULL ROSTER contests and three times their cost in single game SHOWDOWN contests.
